Our Garden’s Progress in July

There have been quite a few changes to our own garden in the past month. We’ve had a pretty wet July with some heavy monsoons, which I think has been great for the plants. On several occasions we didn’t have to irrigate because of the rain, although most of the time it will get blistering hot not long after the clouds clear, so we have to be paying close attention.

Changes related to our herbs were already captured in Update on Herbs.

The sweet & hot cherry pepper plants (planted back in May) failed, possibly due to the heat. But we planted two new hot pepper plants in June and these are growing slowly & hanging in there but just aren’t giving us anything yet.

The banana pepper, planted at the same time, is more hopeful.

The orange bell pepper, also planted in June, finally has some nice big peppers on it; we are just being patient and waiting until they turn orange before harvesting. This photo is from last weekend – they are now closer to a yellow/orange color but need just another few days.

As I’ve mentioned, our cherry tomato plant is doing very well – we constantly have a supply of tomatoes.

The roma is hanging in there but doesn’t have the foliage of the cherry and we’ve lost quite a few to birds. I’m still hopeful we’ll have some to harvest soon, though.

We have also begun some new crop where we had extra space. It’s not too late (so I’m told..) to plant some more beans and peppers

So where our wander beans failed, we have now planted some yard long beans from seed about two weeks ago. Twelve of them. They sprouted within a few days and have grown pretty fast. This photo is from a week ago.

We also planted a variety of peppers a few days later (hot and mild) where we used to have the zucchini plant. They haven’t sprouted yet but supposedly take a week or two.

And we planted edamame where the cucumber plant used to be. Apparently you can sow these in our area up until September. These also sprouted quickly and seem to be doing well so far.

Fingers crossed everything will do well and enjoy the rain as we continue through monsoon season!

  1. […] that show how quickly these plants have grown in just a few weeks (we planted seed at the end of July). They both are getting flowers and it shouldn’t be too long now before they produce some […]
